Young Carers

Young Carers

At Hartsholme Academy we are aware that some of our pupils are young carers.  A young carer is someone under 18 who is caring or helping to care for a family member or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or addiction problems.  They often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult such as:

  • domestic tasks (cooking, cleaning, shopping)
  • personal care (helping with mobility, washing, dressing, giving medicine)
  • self care
  • sibling care

How We Support Young Carers

We know that young carers may need a little extra support to enjoy and do well at school.  At Hartsholme Academy, Miss Mitchell and Mrs Millar are our Young Carers Champions and they are committed to ensuring that all pupils who are young carers are identified and supported effectively.

Our young carers club runs after school every Wednesday from 3.30pm - 4.30pm.  The children can attend as often as they wish and can take part in a variety of fun activities with other young carers.

Mrs Millar also holds drop-in sessions in class 4M on a Monday lunchtime if your child needs help with homework, to chat or just to make contact between group sessions.

After School Club News

Our last after school club for 2019 will be held on Wednesday 11th December from 3.30 until 5pm where we will be having a Christmas movie and popcorn night!  We hope you all have a lovely Christmas and look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Young carers club will restart on Wednesday 15th January from 3.30-4.30pm.
